If you’re unsure as to how to make a gift basket, you need to consider the following factors before you start to make one. Gift baskets are perfect for special occasions and make a lovely present for a variety of occasions such as Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries or leaving gifts. They’re also ideal for people moving in to new homes or for people who are sick.
Making and selling gift baskets is also an excellent idea for any person who is creative and looking to make a second income or a full time income working from home. The internet has made the advertising and promotion of work at home businesses so much easier and cheaper to do. So let’s learn to make gift baskets …
First things first. Before you start creating your basket, you need to consider the theme of the gifts you’re going to include in it? Who is the basket going to be given to? The recipient will determine the style of the basket and it’s contents.
There are a huge variety of themes that you could use for the gift basket. If you’re short of ideas then you could consider the following styles:
- fruit
- fine foods
- wine
- wine and cheese
- golf or other sports items
Obvious further considerations are size and cost. How much do you want to spend on the gift basket? Are you giving it to a friend or family member, or are you planning on selling the basket for a profit? The bigger your budget the more scope you have. The size of the basket you choose to use will also determine what and how much you put in it. There are a huge array of baskets and containers that you could use for your gift basket. The days when all gifts came in the traditional wicker basket are gone.
A visit to your local craft store or nearest department store should give you lots of ideas on the price and availability of different types of containers to use. Alternatively you can search online for ideas, there are literally hundreds of sites selling all containers of all shapes and sized made from all sorts of different materials. When looking for basket ideas, don’t limit your thoughts to conventional baskets and containers. Think laterally, for example, I’ve seen people use plant pots, old buckets or other such similar objects. The key to your choice is your theme. Once you’ve chosen your theme, consider what containers or objects associated with that theme could be used for your gift ‘basket’. Lateral, creative thinking will make your gift basket unique.
When filling your basket with gifts, again stick to your chosen theme. Only use items that are related to each other, and try to select gifts that look attractive to the eye. If possible chose similar coloured objects, or just a couple of colours that compliment each other to enhance the appearance of your basket. It’s also important to use a coloured liner or linen inside your basket that matches the gifts.
The final element to your gift basket creation is the wrapping of it. Always wrap your basket with cellophane and for the finishing touch tie it up with a ribbon that matches the colour scheme of the contents and attach a gift card as appropriate.
The best way to learn to make gift baskets, is to actually make them and learn by your mistakes! Ultimately the quality and appearance of your finished creation will depend on your creativity, eye for colour and your budget.
