Tips For Making Gift Baskets

Why not make some fun homemade gift baskets?  Homemade gift baskets are more personal and can be themed to the exact likes of the recipient.  There are endless themes and gifts that you can use when creating your own gift baskets.  It can be inexpensive and lots of fun to do … especially when you can’t think of other presents to buy!

Here are some great tips for making gift baskets yourself …

Creating Your Own Gift Baskets

Learn how to make gift baskets that are sure to please the recipient.

Often when I need to purchase a gift I will give a home made gift basket. They are fun to shop for, fun to put together and are always appreciated by the recipient.

When my kids were young and my friends were all having their first babies, I created baby gift baskets. I started with an empty infant bath tub. I filled it with all kinds of things a first time mother might need:

baby shampoo
baby wash
towels
washcloths
blankets
nail clippers
comb/brush set
bath toys
pacifiers
baby spoon
books
mobiles
thermometer

As my kids got older and we were giving birthday gifts to kids I again opted to make my own gift baskets. For young girls we often gave either an arts and craft basket, or a makeup basket.

We’d often start with a plastic storage tub. We’d get a large set of pens, or markers or even chalk. We’d buy a huge tablet of paper, either drawing paper or construction paper. We’d add rubber stamps, hole punches, glue, lanyard string, and for older kids, we’d add idea books.

Our makeup baskets were fun to put together. We often started with a pedicure tub that all the items could be stored in. Depending on the age of the child, we’d buy lip gloss, eye shadow, blush, eye lash curlers and sometimes a hair straightener or hair crimper.

For boys, we loved to buy empty collector card albums and then buy many sets of beginner cards from various sports. If we knew the child loved a certain t.v. show, we’d try to get cards from that t.v. show as well.

A young child’s summer birthday almost always started with a large pail and shovel and then we added in toys, trucks, cars and stuffed animals.

Of course adults love baskets too. For weddings and wedding showers an empty dish drainer makes a wonderful "basket" to load the other gifts into. Again, I’d try to get lots of items a first time home owner would need:

hand held can opener
vegetable peeler
spatula
poultry scissors
pot holders
rolling pin
meat thermometer
strainer
egg slicer
potato masher

Of course all of these suggestions are just thought starters. Once in the store, the ideas of what you can add are just endless.

Here are a few more ideas of themed baskets you can make:

wine and cheese baskets (use a large ice bucket as a base)
bathroom product baskets (use a bathroom garbage can as your base)
going off to college baskets (use a storage crate as your base)
chocolate baskets (use a melting pot as your base)
coffee and/or tea baskets (use coffee mugs as your base)
gardening basket (use a pail as your base)
tool basket (fill an empty tool chest with lots of tools)

Often times I’ve asked other guests to contribute to the basket, making a very nice gift for the recipient and giving us the opportunity to include all the items we want to give.

Baskets can be large or small, from one person or from a group of people. You can use either cellophane or wrapping paper to finish off the basket. Use your imagination and create baskets you know the recipient will enjoy!

Select a pack of handkerchief or better still a set of hand towel that has his initials embroidered, body wash, shaving brush, shaving cream, aftershave, hair gel, pumice stone with wood handle, nailbrush, bath brush, body massager and a body wrap. Cover the basket with a shimmering net material and secure it with a contrast ribbon.

Spread some shredded color paper at the bottom of the basket and arrange the items. Then wrap the basket with a net fabric. Attach some small tinkling bells to the ribbon.

Baby shower: Buy a blanket, a baby outfit, baby powder, soap, lotions, pacifier, diaper pins, box of diapers, baby wipes, baby brush and bottles. Place the blanket at the bottom and the rest of the articles on it. You could also add a soft toy to the list of articles if you want. Wrap the basket with a colorful wrapper and pin fresh flowers to it.

Coffee theme: The coffee basket can be ideal for anybody who loves coffee. And are quite safe bets for birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. Pick up some specialty coffees and creamers, coffee bean grinder, small coffee pot and a set of coffee mugs. The coffee theme is surely going to rock. Use brown tissue papers at the bottom of the basket. You can put coffee beans in small sachets and spread it in between your items or fill in the mugs with coffee flavored candies. Wrap it with a brown cellophane paper and a contrasting ribbon.

You can actually create as many themes as you like. If you know the tastes of the person, you are creating the basket for, the better it is. Just like chocolate gift baskets are common on Valentine’s Day, you can make gift baskets of consumables like cookies, tea, wine, or spices. Everybody loves them. You can add a gourmet book to the collection. If you still want to be different, you can decide on a gardening theme for somebody who loves gardening or if you like you can put in movie passes, music show tickets, gift certificate to bookstore or a lifestyle store or a voucher to a favorite restaurant or a day at the spa or even a magazine subscription. Have fun with these delightful ideas.

How To Make Gift Baskets

The article below offers great instruction for making gift baskets, as you’ll see it’s not that hard at all … and homemade baskets make a lovely gift idea for almost anyone and any occasion …

Learn to Make Gift Baskets

The ‘art of gifting’ involves careful consideration and research. Gift baskets are especially useful when gifting your near and dear ones, not being satisfied with getting them any one component of the preferred ‘whole’ gift concept!

Gift baskets are very simple and extremely easy to assemble. They are just the solution when you can’t decide on any one particular gift item and are suitable for all occasions. The basket does not have to be the typical hamper type any more. Today there are a myriad of basket shapes that you can experiment with. There are baskets with or without handles and in sizes that can accommodate almost anything you set your heart on. You can design the baskets according to the planned contents which could include chocolates, coffee and cake, beauty products, deodorants and perfumes, apparel, accessories etc.

You need to decide on the special basket ‘theme’ before anything else. The next step involves looking for the perfectly sized basket, either in a brick and mortar outlet or online. There are a number of resources that enable you to experiment practically, by fitting the components within and wrapping the basket in the desired fashion to see what the final product would look like, before deciding on any one particular basket. You need to then purchase all the items decided on, within the theme and work on the placement. You could enhance the look of the basket further with a little decoration, in sync with the theme. For example, if the theme is ‘chocolates and flowers’, you could pin a few artificial flowers on the sides or wind a flowery creeper along the handle and include some chocolate wrappers for the buffer or stuffing within.

Use cellophane sheets to cover the contents in the basket. The sheets are available in many colors and color combinations. You need to place the sheet on a table surface and place the basket in the middle. After placing a cloth napkin or paper doily at the base, arrange the gift items in the basket. In case the gift basket contains breakable items, secure them by wrapping them individually in cloth or tissue, to prevent breakage. The positioning of the components can be done tall to short, from the center all around. Irrespective of the theme, a sprinkle of glitter and candy makes any gift basket special.

You need to then gather the cellophane paper from all sides, pulling up the short sides first. This is best done with someone’s help. The cellophane can be secured with a twist tie, which can then be covered with ribbon. You can choose the width of the ribbon according to the size of the basket and the items within. The bigger the basket, the broader the ribbon and vice versa! You can design a nice bow and leave long, tendril-like curved tails. You could also choose from among the ready-made bows now available. This will eliminate the need to remove the twist tie.

Once the gift basket is wrapped, attach the gift tag either with string or tape. The way the tag is place also makes a huge difference to the overall appearance of the gift basket. In case of any gaping cellophane, the adjustment should always be made by pulling gently on the top section. Then, the secured section can be sealed with a small piece of clear tape. You can also choose to gather the cellophane to form ‘petals’ of a unique basket bouquet. You should avoid touching the cellophane often and adjusting it unnecessarily. The paper crumbles easily and will look used and untidy after some time. Buy the clear variety of cellophane, with small gold patterns. The design is very versatile for any occasion and covers up any kind or re-wrapping or adjustment endeavor.

Gift basket themes and ideas vary according to the preference of the receiver. The cost of assembling a gift basket depends on the quantity and the cost of the items in it. In order to save money, you should plan ahead and look at announced ’sale items’ over many days. In the case of a ‘romantic’ theme, the basket would ideally include a small bottle of wine, two wine glasses, cloth napkins, a candle and candies. A great Mother’s Day gift basket would ideally have slicing and paring knives, packets of spices or seasonings, a garlic press, mittens, a set of small recipe books and measuring spoons.

Gift Baskets For Newborn

Gift baskets for newborn babies are a perfect gift for this very special occasion. Learn how to make new born gift baskets in the article below.  Not only does making them yourself give them a personal feel, its cheaper than buying them and you can make the cost fit your budget …

Don’t Buy Baby Gift Baskets, Make Them Yourself
by: Isaac Rubins

Did you ever notice how some baby gifts stand out from the crowd while others seem to get lost in the pile of gifts? Baby gift baskets are nothing but a handful of gifts including toys, books, candy, etc. packed in a beautiful basket. But to buy baby gift baskets is not sufficient these days. The presentation is what matters the most. This has less to do with the cost of the baby gifts then with the way they are put together or presented.

Steps to Build a Beautiful Baby Gift Basket

To present a baby gift basket which looks unique and draws attention the following suggestions should be helpful:

1) While selecting the gifts to put in the basket one must carefully think about the current and important needs of the parents. For example, a coupon for baby sitting, especially at night, can be a very good option.

2) One can show his or her creativity by putting together a nursing survival kit comprising breast pads, lansinoh cream, and a copy of "The Womanly Art of Breast Feeding".

3) Another option is to create a sleep-time baby gift basket consisting of a soft baby blanket, a white noise CD and a miracle blanket.

4) One must be very particular about providing everything which will be needed by the parents to enjoy the gift. For example, if the presents requires a set of batteries, then it would be nice to include a small package of batteries.

5) The ideal baby gift basket should be the one which doesn’t require any work on the part of the parents to enjoy.

6) It would be nice to include the gift receipt in the basket in case the parents get two or three similar baby gifts so it will be easy to exchange it for a different one.

7) A card mentioning the full name and address of the person presenting the gift should be in the basket so it will help the parents keep track of the gifts and return a thank you note if they choose.

childs gift basket

8) It is important that if one doesn’t know the family very well, then he or she should not send a personalized gift. With a personalized gift, too often the name gets misspelled. For example, names like John and Kathy can be spelled as Jon and Cathy. Moreover, it’s very difficult to know by what name the parents call the baby. If they named her Margaret, but are used to calling her by a nickname like Peggy, then it’s possible that the child would never get a gift with Margaret engraved or embroidered on it.

So there you have it. If you want to buy baby gift baskets for newborn babies and their moms, you can stand out from the rest with the above recommendations and a little creativity.
