It’s common for your kids to get too excited on decorating the aquarium. Tell them that bright decoration and over decoration will be stressful for the fish. Typically kids that are in middle school or above will understand the nitrogen cycle already. The good bacteria and the bad bacteria will help them understand the cycle better.
